Catherine Verfaillie Under Scrutiny For Erroneous Duplication of Data

Known for her seminal work with multipotent adult progenitor cells (MAPC), former University of Minnesota stem cell researcher Catherine Verfaillie is the subject of an ongoing investigation into the validity of specific data duplicated in two different journals.  Flow cytomety data reproduced in articles from both Nature and the Journal of Experimental Hematology in 2002 are the subject of hot debate.  At the epicenter lies skeptical experts who question whether the duplication was an "honest error" as a 3 person UMN panel concluded, or could the data possibly be unreliable, in which case stem cell experts are split on whether they believe the erroneous data affects the overall interpretation and conclusions of the original article.  Verfaille replied, "I personally don't think it affects the conclusion of the paper, and I've spoken to many people who personally don't think so," but it is "up to Nature to decide." Currently, Nature is investigating the data more thoroughly to determine if  they believe further actions are necessary. Read more in  News of the Week from Science/AAAS    -DR Wakeman
